As I understand the story, this rifle was owned by a RCMP -Royal Canadian Mounted Police (aka: Mountie) officer who moved to Texas after he retired. He traded the rifle for a trailer my father owned. The gun has two notches in the stock. Back in the day, it was a custom to put a notch on your gun when it killed someone. Whether that was the case with this gun is unknown. It could mean that the Mountie simply “got his man” as the saying goes.
The Winchester’73 went into production in 1873 in New Haven Connecticut and became known as the “Gun That Won the West. A Google search brings up a lot of interest information about the history of this gun. They also made a movie about this rifle called the Gun That Won the West. I’ve noticed it on T.V. a couple of times in the last several months.
